Links for Brains: 12/29/2008

  • The Independent’s Science Editor laments scientific illiteracy among the chattering famous. (Don’t read if you ever again want to vote or go to the movies without feeling slightly dirty.)
  • Proporietor of silly little blog wins Skepchick’s Comment O’ The Week contest for the third time. (Self-promotional linkwhoring still not a federal crime.)
  • Actual headline from Discovery News: How Visiting Your Family Warps Your Brain. (It turns out that they do make you crazy. But not horny. Praise Darwin.)
  • Pakistani Taliban threatens to blow up girl’s schools, because “female education spreads vulgarity in society.” (”Vulgarity” raises hand, asks to not participate in such a stupid sentence.)
  • New Scientist’s Top 10 Articles About Evolution of 2008. (It’s kind of an all-purpose “bugger off, Creationist” link.)

Where I’ve Been For The Past Week

Mostly dealing with holidays. Being a mixed-faith American family (Jewish, Christian and No Thank You) means juggling obligations so that nobody’s particular early-winter celebration is privileged over another. It also means presents and, in some cases, genuine camaraderie, so all of that contortion of scheduling is generally worthwhile.

Of course, the non-Christian holidays don’t get quite the same Official Respect as Christmas, so other public obligations continue to take their chunk of time. For instance, my volunteer work with the City has continued despite all of the various seasonalities.

I’ve also been doing some school work, trying to get a little bit ahead of the load for the remainder of the winter quarter. We’re down to about six weeks until finals, and our baby’s due date, so I figure that anything I don’t have to do during January is just as well.

And I’ve also tried to do some semi-recreational reading. I got some books for various holidays, and I’ve been doing a little basic research into an idea that I had. In that vein, I cracked a Bible for the first time in ages. Genesis, I am pleased to report, is still a laff riot.

So, now that holidays have calmed down, I should be back to posting more regularly. Hopefully, all 30 of you are breathing a sigh of relief. In the meantime, I have a question for you.

If Cain had a pet dinosaur, what species would it be? Thoughts?
